HIVE HIRE & MAINTENANCE

Place native beehives at your business

Place a pair of Australian native stingless beehives at your corporate or business location to demonstrate your commitment to sustainability and the environment.

Our expert beekeepers take full care of the beehives offered in this service to provide a completely hassle free experience. This includes installation, periodic maintenance, health monitoring, and hive replacement should the bees fall ill.

Our beehives are protected by a tough and attractive hardwood box, decorated with an authentic, local Indigenous artwork (representing the significant connection that many Aboriginal people have with native bees) on the roof.

Importantly, our bees are completely stingless and therefore pose no stinging risk to passers-by.

Why native bees?

Many people are aware of the difficulties that bee populations are facing, however less people know that it is in fact our native bee species that need our help, not introduced species such as the European Honey Bees.

Native bee species have evolved for millions of years alongside our native plants which means that they are generally far more effective pollinators for those plants. Native bees are completely harmless, lacking the presence of a stinger, and pose no risk to passers-by. These bees are also one of the most important pollinators for Australian crop production. In addition, native bees are significant to many indigenous cultures (and our hives recognise this with authentic indigenous artwork).

Not only are native bees incredibly important for the environment and culture, they are also the most under threat. They are the bees that are most impacted by pesticides, land clearing, monocultures, and competition with introduced species.

Have a real impact

Particularly in urban areas such as Sydney, issues including land clearing and pesticide use have led to declines in many species of native bees. In the 2019 bushfire season, over 1 000 000 native stingless bee colonies are estimated to have perished in NSW alone. Supporting a hive of native bees is one of the most effective ways to help these native bee populations.

By supporting two colonies on site, you are:

  • Supporting 60, 000 bees for their entire lives every year

  • Facilitating the pollination of tens of thousands of local flowers - a single bee can pollinate more than 150 flowers in one day

  • Increasing the local population of native plants, as pollination by native bees can lead to higher seed set
